Elkem Soderberg Electrode Carbon Paste Plant, Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu

Elkem is one of the world’s leading providers of advanced material solutions especially in carbon solutions

This plant was setup in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu Sarawak to supply Soderberg Electrode Carbon Paste to the surrounding Smelter Industries in Samalaju.

The Søderberg electrode paste (SEP) is a very critical raw material for smelting industries such as ferrosilicon, ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferronickel, and other ferroalloys as well as in the production of titanium, copper, platinum and silicon metal. For Samalaju  smelter companies carrying out ferroalloy smelting operations, it is vital to have good quality SEP to ensure the consistency and quality of their product.

The Søderberg electrode paste is produced as a mix of electrically calcined anthracite and coal tar pitch, with specially formulated recipes to cater for different industries and smelting furnaces. The Søderberg electrode paste undergoes a self baking process in the furnace whereby it becomes a shaped electrode inside the electrode column casing. The electrodes will then conduct electrical power and melt all the raw materials within the furnace thus completing the smelting process.

The total area of the plant and land is around 8 ha.

The plant costs around RM40 million to set up.
